Madeline Island
Madeline Island is a very popular summer destination in Wisconsin. It is a short ferry ride from Bayfield to the island (about $30 round trip for a car, and $7-$17 per person). You can camp there, or find limited lodging. There are amazing beaches, biking, hikes, kayaking, and arts to see. There are also tours to see the different Apostle Islands in the area.

Houghton Falls Trail
If you don't feel like taking the ferry over, you can experience some of the lakeside formations on the Houghton Falls Trail located about 15 minutes south of Bayfield. This easy 1.5 mile out-and-back trail will take you through a forest, rock formations, and eventually open up to Lake Superior at the end. You can walk down the stairs and get a closer look at the lake and cliffs, or stay above at the overlook. The entire hike is beautiful and offers something for everyone. This hike would be best in the summer and fall, but accessible at other times of year too. If you decide to wander beyond the trail, step carefully along the cliffs and drop-offs. This would be a great place to have a picnic lunch!

Big Manitou Falls

Big Manitou Falls Loop
This easy 1.1 mile loop will take you across a Hwy to the tallest waterfall in Wisconsin. Big Manitou Falls has multiple viewpoints, and this trail will let you see it from multiple viewpoints. Pattison State Park is down the road from this hike as well if you would like to spend more time in the area. This is trail is accessible year-round. You need a state park annual sticker for $28 (out-of-state $38) or a day use for $8 (out-of-state $11), which can be purchased in the parking lot. There are also photo stations set up for Travel Wisconsin here, so snap some great shots!

Morgan Falls

Morgan Falls Trail is a 1.6 mile out-and-back trail near Mason, WI. This moderate hike takes you through different landscapes of prairie, forests, and ends in what feels like a magical fairy canyon. The trail is open year-round and a good snowshoeing option in the winter. There is another section of this trail that we did not explore, and takes you to St. Peter's Dome. There is a $5 day use fee that can be paid at the parking lot.

Amnicon Falls State Park

Amnicon Falls and Snake Pit Falls Trail Loop
An easy 0.6 mile hike. Some parts are paved and some are cleared dirt path. This is an easy hike and can be visited year-round. If you choose to leave the designated path, be careful on slippery rocky surfaces. A state parks sticker is required for parking in the lot, daily use is $8 (out-of-state $11) and an annual state sticker is $28 (out-of-state $38).
